Basin Electric supports Brave the Shave in its first independent year
Basin Electric Power Cooperative has pledged $150,000 over three years to support Brave the Shave, a charity originally established by the cooperative with the mission of fighting childhood cancer through family support and research. This year is Brave the Shave’s first year operating as an independent non-profit charity separate from the cooperative.
Brave the Shave received its federal IRS designation as a 501(c) (3) tax-exempt charity in early January, and Basin Electric’s financial contribution was approved this week by the cooperative’s Charitable Giving Committee, which disperses donations to charities throughout its nine-state service area.
“Basin Electric is proud to support Brave the Shave and congratulate it on stepping out on its own,” says Curt Pearson, Basin Electric’s director of communications and creative services. “We urge other area businesses to show their support for this very worthy charity that helps so many families during an extremely challenging time.”
Brave the Shave began its mission 11 years ago as a head-shaving event to raise donations for a national pediatric cancer research organization. Two years ago, in an effort to create a fund that would provide “wrap-around” services for local families dealing with the challenges surrounding a childhood cancer diagnosis, the organization began raising funds for area families through the Brave the Shave Family Fund. During this time it also began donating to the Andrew McDonough Be Positive (B+) Foundation, which provides world-class, cutting-edge pediatric cancer research and now serves as Brave the Shave’s “research arm.”
“On behalf of Brave the Shave and all the families it supports, we’d like to thank Basin Electric for its generous donation,” says Taner Ohlsen, Brave the Shave family representative. “More than $2.5 million has been raised to help fight childhood cancer over the past 11 years, and none of that would have been possible without our great friends at Basin Electric. We truly appreciate all their support over the years and we look forward to what the future holds for us as we venture out on our own.”
