Basin Electric’s Dakota Gas receives top industry ranking

Dakota Gasification Company (Dakota Gas), a subsidiary of Basin Electric, recently improved its industry ranking with Factory Mutual Insurance (FM), moving from 33^rd to first among industry peers over the last five years.

FM’s industry ranking is based on its RiskMark score, a comprehensive 1-100 assessment that reflects FM’s loss history and evaluates fire and equipment protection, natural hazards, human element programs, and inherent occupancy risk. As a site’s Risk Mark score improves, so does its percentile and quartile ranking among industry peers.  

“Higher scores mean better-managed risk and lower likelihood of loss,” John Frank, director of risk and insurance at Basin Electric, said. “Moving up in percentile or quartile means Dakota Gas is doing a good job of managing hazards at Dakota Gas, and historically that ties directly to fewer, less severe losses and better business continuity.”

From 2020 to 2025, Dakota Gas successfully completed 32 FM recommendations, addressing over $430 million in potential losses. This progress was a major factor contributing to the company’s improved RiskMark score and overall industry ranking.
