Marketing and Asset Management
The Marketing & Asset Management function evaluates and, ultimately, manages the cooperative’s risk related to short-term commodity and asset exposures.
With a central office able to manage Basin Electric and Dakota Gasification Company’s fuel, power and co-product commodities, the changes in positions and prices for each commodity can be used to mitigate risks and bring new value to the cooperative. The group also provides forecasting and analytic services to support the transaction activity.
Basin Electric’s short-term (18 months out) power and natural gas desks manage the market exposures for baseload generation, wind projects, gas peaking units, member and non-member loads, transmission and (RTO) offers and bids. The short-term desk also manages the financial hedging for Dakota Gas' natural gas and tar oil exposures.
Basin Electric's real time desk manages and markets west side electricity operations for Basin Electric. Beginning Oct. 1, 2015, the real time desk will also manage Basin Electric’s exposures on the Eastern Interconnect in MISO and SPP.
Marketing also includes management of the sales of Dakota Gasification's products including Anhydrous Ammonia, Ammonium Sulfate, Carbon Dioxide, Tar Oil, Naphtha, Phenol, Cresylic, Liquid Nitrogen and Krypton/Xenon. A partnership with OCI N.V., called N-7 LLC., markets Urea, Anhydrous Ammonia, Ammonium Sulfate, and Diesel Exhaust Fluid.
