Lonesome Creek Station

To serve the increasing demand for electricity by member cooperatives in northwest North Dakota, Basin Electric is adding on to a natural gas-fired peaking station west of Watford City.

The Lonesome Creek Station is primarily used to support the local transmission system and serve loads developing in the area. The unit incorporates a synchronous clutch.

If needed, the turbine can be disconnected from the generator, and the generator acts as a motor, providing much-needed voltage support to the area.

Construction on Phase II of the project began in mid-2014, with a target commercial operation date of January 2015.

Construction on Phase III of the project and is slated to begin in late spring 2015, and completion is targeted for June 2016.
