Basin Electric employees attend NRECA's first virtual fly-in

For the first time in its history, National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA) held its annual Legislative Conference virtually. The conference was cancelled in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but the organization decided to hold its spring event in an online format to avoid cancelling the 2021 event.

Although the conference was different this year, thousands of people from across the country were still able to attend, including representatives from Basin Electric. Topics of conversation included The Flexible Financing for Rural America Act, Electric Cooperatives View on a Lower-Carbon Future, Comparable Federal Incentives for Energy Innovation, Protect the Co-op Toolbox for Rural Economic Development, and Effective Virtual Advocacy Strategies.

“It’s hard to replace the grassroots visits that happen during the time-tested and longstanding legislative rally, but NRECA did a nice job of converting the conference to an online format,” said Jean Schafer, Basin Electric senior legislative representative. “With the 2020 event being cancelled, it was important to meet this year so co-ops could weigh-in on issues during 2021. It seemed like the co-ops and statewides (statewide electric cooperative associations) dove in and embraced the virtual format.”
