Basin Electric prides itself on its culture and commitment to its employees, offering professional development opportunities, great benefits, and a positive work environment.

A native of Mandan, North Dakota, Kyren Miller has been with Basin Electric since August 2022, when he started as a training coordinator for Transmission System Maintenance (TSM).

Miller earned an associate degree in process plant technology, a bachelor’s degree in education, and a master’s degree in teaching and technology. Prior to working for Basin Electric, Miller spent seven years working in plant operations near Omaha, Nebraska. He then worked at Bismarck State College for 17 years as chair of the energy department. “I enjoy learning about the energy industry and am enthusiastic about education, and I heard Basin Electric had a positive work environment along with great pay and benefits,” he says. When the position opened and the opportunity arose to work with and train others in the energy field, he decided to apply.

Miller’s work entails implementation of training curriculum that meets industry standards in relation to lineman, substation electricians, system protection, telecommunication, and administrative professionals working within TSM.  “My day-to-day is a variation of developing course content for Learning Central, teaching face-to-face courses, and working with our apprentices,” he says.

“The best part of my job is working with the dedicated staff and trades either in the office or in the field. Everyone is very nice and willing to help each other out or offer advice,” Miller says. “I enjoy talking to the other training and safety coordinators about industry topics and working within Learning Central.”

Miller hopes to have a long career with Basin Electric. He appreciates how Basin Electric is involved in the local communities it serves, and he enjoys the little things that are done to help build a positive work environment such as family night.

In his free time, Miller volunteers with the Mandan Soccer Club and coaches his kids’ teams. He also enjoys fishing and hunting in the great outdoors.

“So far, I’ve had a great experience working for Basin Electric, and would recommend working here to family and friends,” Miller says. “Having a flexible schedule and great benefits is a good way to attract and retain employees.”
