Lonesome Creek Station, a natural gas-based peaking station west of Watford City, ND, started commercial operation in 2013.

The plant was built to serve the increasing demand for electricity by member cooperatives in northwest North Dakota. Five units, each with a capacity of 45 megawatts (MW), are primarily used to support the local transmission system and serve loads developing in the area.
