What happens when two organizations that are committed to youth come together? Lots of hair flies and a tremendous amount of good happens. Organizers of North Dakota’s St. Baldrick’s event are excited to announce a partnership with the Missouri Valley Family YMCA in Bismarck.
“We’re pleased to host the 2012 St. Baldrick’s event in the McDowell gym,” says Andy Dahl, Missouri Valley Family YMCA executive director. “Our leadership in providing enrichment and a culture of health and wellness for youth make our partnership with St. Baldrick’s a natural fit.”
Through the Strong Kids Program, the Missouri Valley Family YMCA provides programs and resources that nurture the potential of kids, promotes healthy living, and inspires a sense of social responsibility.
This year’s St. Baldrick’s event will take place Mar. 16 and will begin at 1:30 p.m., with doors opening at noon for early bidding opportunities on a silent auction and bake sale. Among items to be auctioned is a signed football by former Vikings tight end and North Dakota native Jimmy Kleinsasser.
Originally started by Basin Electric Power Cooperative, Bismarck, ND, the annual hair-shaving event has grown into a statewide fundraiser for pediatric cancer research and fellowships. This year’s event is cosponsored by MDU Resources Group, National Information Solutions Cooperative (NISC), Basin Electric and Great River Energy. Additional organizations may join as sponsors by calling Mary Klecker-Green at 557-5604.
Since the event came to North Dakota in 2008, nearly 700 volunteers have shaved their heads in solidarity of children with cancer. In the four events Bismarck-Mandan has hosted, more than $500,000 has been raised for childhood cancer research and fellowships.
St. Baldrick’s is the world’s largest volunteer-driven fundraising event for childhood cancer research. Since 2000, St. Baldrick’s events have taken place worldwide and in 50 states, raising more than $120 million. More than 190,000 volunteers have shaved their heads while requesting donations of support.
Volunteers and shavees are already signing up to lose their locks. Anyone interested in getting involved — whether to shave, donate hair or volunteer — go to http://www.tinyurl.com/NDbravestheshave.
