Basin Electric Power Cooperative will be showcasing its plug-in hybrid vehicle during the first annual Great Plains Energy Exposition in Bismarck, ND, October 29-30. The event is being hosted by Senator Byron Dorgan (D-ND), and Basin Electric is a major sponsor.
In May, Basin Electric added two new 2008 Ford Escape Hybrids to the vehicle fleet. Basin Electric has partnered with the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA), Cooperative Research Network (CRN) and the state of North Dakota to convert of one of the Ford Escapes into a Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) - to use electricity as fuel.
Basin Electric will have its Ford Escape on display during the conference. Technicians will perform the conversion during the conference, and will be on hand to answer questions. The conversion is being performed by A123Systems of Massachusetts and Hymotion of Ontario, Canada.
"This plug-in hybrid display will give everyone an opportunity to see some of the latest cutting-edge energy technology up close," Sen. Dorgan says. "My goal in putting together this Energy Expo is to foster a discussion about how we in North Dakota can make use of our energy resources to move our country away from its dependence on foreign sources of energy. Basin Electric?s display will add a lot of value to that discussion"
