Short biographies on 61 of Basin Electric's 69 original incorporators have been published on Basin Electric's website.

There are eight left to do. Kathi Risch, Basin Electric senior staff writer/editor, needs help to complete seven of them. For some of the incorporators she has a photo, but no information. For others, she has no photo and only limited information.

  • Arthur Gabel, Spencer, SD - We have a photo. Need more biographical information.
  • Vernon Johnson, Lake Andes, SD - We have a photo. Need more biographical information.
  • John H. Hyde, Creston, IA - John J. Hyde was the manager Southwestern Federated Power Cooperative in Creston, IA. Need photo and information.
  • Ellwood H. Johnson, Minneapolis, MN - A real mystery man. We have absolutely no leads as to why he was at the meeting. Need photo and profile.
  • Robert Monkman, Desmet, SD - We have a photo. Need information
  • Bernard R. Riley, Salem, SD - We have some information. Need a photo.
  • W. H. Van Orsdel, Marion, SD -  We have a photo. Van Orsdel was the manager of Turner-Hutchinson Electric Cooperative from 1947-1961. He also was the manager at Codington-Clark, Watertown, SD, from Jan. 15, 1946, to Feb. 9, 1947. Need information for profile.
  • G. J. Johnson, Shadehill, SD - We have a photo. Will receive information soon to complete this one.

Obituaries, photos, children's names and contact information, or the name of the incorporator's spouse, are all very helpful in the search for additional information.

On May 5, 1961, 69 people from several states gathered at the Patterson Hotel in Bismarck, ND, to sign Articles of Incorporation for Basin Electric. Their names are on a brass plaque immediately outside of the main entrance to the Headquarters building. Kathi Risch, Basin Electric senior staff writer/editor, has been seeking information about the original incorporators and compiling these profiles.

In the next several months, prior to the cooperative’s 50th anniversary celebration to be held at the 2011 annual meeting on Nov. 9, Risch will share what she has uncovered.
