Reuben Ritthaler was recently elected president of Western Fuels Association board of directors. Ritthaler had previously served as vice president of the board. A Basin Electric director since 2001, Ritthaler represents District 10 – Powder River Energy Corporation (PRECorp). He is also a director on the Dakota Coal Company and Montana Limestone Company subsidiary boards. Ritthaler and his family live on a ranch near Upton, WY.
Western Fuels Association, a fuel supply cooperative and coal producer since 1973, supplies fuel for coal-based power plants in the region. Through affiliated companies, it operates the Dry Fork Mine near Gillette, WY, and the New Horizon Mine in southwestern Colorado at Nucla. Dry Fork and New Horizon are both surface mines. Western Fuels also contracts with rail transportation to move coal from mines to power plants.
Western Fuels supply 17 million tons of coal annually from mining companies in the Powder River Basin of Wyoming. The Powder River Basin has the largest reserves of low-sulfur coal in the nation. The coal is mined in strict conformance with air and water quality standards.
Basin Electric Power Cooperative is a Class A member of Western Fuels.
