Another milestone in the construction of a combined-cycle power plant in South Dakota.

First riser set at Deer Creek Station

More pieces are fitting together on the Deer Creek Station construction site in Brookings County, SD.

On Oct. 27, the first riser was set for the combined-cycle power plant’s air cooled condenser. Craig Muilenburg, Basin Electric construction coordinator II, said the operation took less than an hour. “From when the riser was picked to when workers started tack welding it into place, it took 45 minutes,” he said. “The biggest concern was that it would fit just right because it was built from several pieces. And it fit.”

In the photo, you can see workers standing inside the tube to which the riser will connect. Muilenburg said the riser is 9’ 2 ¼“ in diameter, weighs 55,000 pounds and is approximately 65’ in length.

The risers connect the exhaust from the steam turbine to the air cooled condenser. The steam will travel up the riser, and fall down through cooling tube bundles on the A-frame.

The Deer Creek Station is scheduled for commercial operation in June 2012.
