Addressing the question of what to do with Dry Fork Station's surplus materials, housing units and equipment began months ago.

Basin Electric's newest baseload power plant, Dry Fork Station near Gillette, WY, was dedicated on Aug. 11, 2011, and put into commercial operation on Nov. 1. But the business of addressing what to do with its surplus materials, housing units and equipment began months before.

Jim Huncovsky, Basin Electric manager of procurement, said the process put in place among his staff and Dry Fork project team members has yielded cost savings and avoided some costs, and therefore is supporting construction and operations at other Basin Electric and member facilities.

According to Dave Valer, Basin Electric supervisor of materials services, procuring materials required for construction of Dry Fork was their first responsibility. "We knew successful completion of the project meant making the most advantageous use of these surplus assets by disposing of them efficiently," Valer said.

Huncovsky and Valer attribute the success of the cooperative's surplus material disposal efforts at Dry Fork Station to excellent communication among Basin Electric project team members and departments. More on this story in a future issue of Basin Today magazine.
