New substation will help serve load in northwestern North Dakota.

Scrapers begin work at Wheelock

Basin Electric began moving dirt Oct. 17 for a new substation being constructed to help serve load in northwestern North Dakota. The Wheelock project will be a 230/115/25-kilovolt (kV) substation, which is being constructed as a delivery point for Basin Electric Class C member Mountrail-Williams Electric Cooperative.

According to Chad Kuntz, Basin Electric electrical engineer III and project coordinator, the 230-kV portion of the substation will be owned and operated by Basin Electric. Mountrail-Williams will own the substation land as well as own and operate the 115-kV and 25-kV portion of the substation.

“The substation will bisect the Williston-to-Tioga 230-kV line and have a 166 MVA (megavolt ampere) 230/115-kV transformer,” Kuntz says. “Basin Electric will construct the 230-kV and 115-kV portions of the project, and Mountrail-Williams will construct the 25-kV portion.”

The substation is scheduled to be energized Oct. 1, 2012. Other substation projects currently under construction include an addition to the Neset Substation near Tioga, ND, and the new Blaisdell Substation about 15 miles east of Stanley, ND.
