ND Dept of Commerce and ND Association of Rural Electric Cooperatives receive grant funds for energy efficiency and renewable energy efforts.
Basin Electric Power Cooperative - June 10, 2010
Considering making an investment in your home’s energy efficiency? With the variety of funds available to consumers, now may be the time act. The state of North Dakota now has grant funds available for energy efficiency and renewable energy efforts. Funds are available to residential and commercial members of the state’s electric cooperatives.
As part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, the North Dakota Department of Commerce initially received $60 million from the $43 billion in stimulus funds allocated nationally to begin investing in energy efficiency and renewable energy programs.
Working with and on behalf of North Dakota’s electric distribution cooperatives, the North Dakota Association of Rural Electric Cooperatives (NDAREC) received a grant for $2.4 million to promote renewable energy and energy efficiency. Of this amount, about $2.1 million will be used directly for consumer rebates. Available energy efficiency funds total $1,292,924, and renewable energy rebates total $802,560.
Rebates vary in amount, and customers are limited to the total amount of rebates they can receive. Residential customers can get energy efficiency rebates for central air conditioning systems, air-source heat pumps, off-peak thermal energy storage heating furnaces, heat pump water heaters, and attic and wall insulation.
Commercial customers can get rebates for central air conditioning systems; air-source heat pumps; certain replacement high-efficiency lighting; premium efficiency motors and variable speed drives; and custom building recommissioning. Both residential and commercial customers can receive rebates for energy audits.
Renewable energy rebates are available to both residential and commercial for closed-loop geothermal heat pumps, small wind turbines, and photovoltaics. Limits to the size of the qualifying systems and the amount of the rebate do apply.
This program, provided by NDAREC and its member cooperatives, is being made available to all members of electric cooperatives in North Dakota. The program began on June 1, 2010, and will end Dec. 31, 2011, or when funds run out.
Details on the program, including eligibility requirements, rebate limits and forms, are available on NDAREC’s website at http://ndarec.com/stimulus/index.html.
Additional information on the program can also be found in the June issue of North Dakota LIVING, and in the May-June issue of Basin Today.
