Basin Electric is planning a new substation in northwest North Dakota about 15 miles east of Stanley. The Blaisdell Substation will be a 230/115-kilovolt (kV) facility that taps Basin Electric's Tioga-to-Logan 230-kV transmission line. The project was approved by Basin Electric directors at their July meeting with a budget of about $8.5 million.
Matthew Stoltz, Basin Electric manager of transmission services, said the new substation is needed to provide a delivery point to member cooperatives in the region. It is a joint project with Basin Electric Class C member Mountrail-Williams Electric Cooperative, which will own the 115-kV side of the substation. Basin Electric will own the 230-kV facilities.
Basin Electric is responsible for the engineering and construction of the project. Chad Kuntz, Basin Electric electrical engineer III and Blaisdell Substation project coordinator, said siting and permitting are under way. Staff is also working on preliminary engineering for the substation.
Construction is slated to start in the spring of 2011. The substation is scheduled to be in service by August 2012.
