Basin Electric subsidiary Dakota Gasification Company hosts thousands of visitors each year at the Great Plains Synfuels Plant. The Visitor's Center is uniquely set up to showcase the only commercial-scale coal gasification plant in the United States that manufactures natural gas as well as the largest carbon dioxide capture and sequestration project in the world.
Interest for the facility continues to grow and has drawn visitors from near and far from all walks of life. Recently, management decided to implement tighter security procedures to ensure all visitors have a safe, secure and educational experience.
The only change made for those touring the Visitor's Center, located in the administration building, is that visitors will be required to show government issued photo identification when entering the Synfuels Plant. The only exception will be for children chaperoned while touring the center.
Foreign groups requesting to visit secured areas of the plant - meaning anything outside the Visitor's Center - will now be required to give 30 days notice as well as a specific business reason for entry. All domestic and foreign secure area tour requests will be reviewed by plant management on a case-by-case basis. If approved, new procedures, set in accordance with the Department of Homeland Security and the Chemical Facilities Anti-terrorism Standards, will be followed.
A new form that collects specific information about foreign visitors, such as passport numbers, date of birth, country of birth and citizenship, will be submitted before allowing the requestor on the plant site. Once a personnel surety check is complete, a tour may be granted.
Management implemented the new procedure to accommodate visitors and tour groups while protecting the security of its assets and proprietary information.
