Basin Electric Power Cooperative - June 11, 2010
More than 130 teachers from a four-state region will attend the Lignite Energy Council’s Education Seminar on June 14-17, 2010, in Bismarck. The seminar provides teachers with information on a variety of industry-related subjects that they can take back to the classroom and integrate into their curriculum, especially science classes and North Dakota studies.
“We have an excellent lineup of presenters this year,” said Renee Walz, LEC’s director of member services and education. “The teachers also will have the opportunity to tour a mine, a power plant and the Dakota Gasification Company’s Synfuels Plant. They will also tour the Visitor Services Center at Fort Mandan near Washburn, which was constructed with building products made of coal combustion byproducts.”
The presenters and their topics this year include:
This marks the 25th year the LEC has hosted a seminar for area teachers. About one-third of the teachers come from out-of-state. Teachers receive two graduate credits for attending the seminar. More than 2,500 teachers have attended the seminar over the years.
The Lignite Energy Council is a trade association representing the state’s four lignite mines, which produce about 30 million tons of lignite annually, along with the lignite-based power plants, the Dakota Gasification Company and more than 330 companies that supply goods and services to the lignite industry.
