Commissioning activities at Basin Electric’s first power plant in Montana are progressing well, according to Dick Shaffer, Basin Electric mechanical engineering supervisor and project coordinator.
The Culbertson Generation Station achieved first fire on June 16 and was successfully synced to the transmission grid on June 18.
“Performance testing was completed June 29. Preliminary performance results look good. Reliability testing should be completed on July 1 and requires a 48-hour continuous run at full load,” Shaffer said.
The next step, emissions testing, will commence following the holiday weekend and will take a couple weeks to complete. “We have to certify to the state of Montana that plant emissions are in compliance with the air quality permit and that our continuous emissions monitoring equipment is functioning correctly and providing reliable data,” he said.
Construction on the 95-megawatt simple cycle, natural gas-fired peaking power plant began in July 2009.
Shaffer said they’re on track for commercial operation by early August. A dedication ceremony for the new power plant will be held on site on Aug. 12.
