Electric cooperatives comprise one-fifth of the new list of America’s top revenue producing co-ops.

Read the story here: Who made NCB’s Co-op 100 list?

At No. 29, Basin Electric Power Cooperative is the highest-ranking electric co-op on the 2011 NCB Co-op 100 List. The Bismarck, N.D.-based G&T had $1.54 billion in revenues last year.

Basin Electric is one of 18 G&Ts and two distribution co-ops on the list, as is Westminster, Colo.-based Tri-State G&T, at No. 38.

“Tri-State’s ranking among the top 100 co-ops in the U.S. is a reflection of our strong group of 44 member co-ops which, despite an overall struggling economy, still have been experiencing relatively steady load growth compared to many other areas of the country,” said Jim Van Someren, communications manager.

At No. 35 is Tucker, Ga.-based Oglethorpe Power Corporation, where Billy Ussery, executive vice president, member and external relations, said the list makes something very clear.

“The fact that Oglethorpe Power and several other G&Ts are perennially found on the list of top co-ops in the U.S. demonstrates just how successful the electric cooperative business model has been,” Ussery said.

New to the list is Henderson, Ky.-based Big Rivers Electric Corporation, where Mark Bailey, president and CEO, called it an honor resulting from years of hard work.

“Several initiatives were taken by the board, member CEOs, and the senior leadership team to successfully transition the cooperative in a direction to be viewed as one of the top generation and transmission cooperatives in the country,” Bailey said.

“We are proud of the economic contribution Big Rivers makes within our region, with sales slightly over half a billion dollars and total assets of $1.4 billion in 2010,” Bailey said. “Even more importantly, Big Rivers is fortunate to be one of the lowest cost producers of safe, reliable wholesale electricity in the nation.”

The nation’s No. 1 co-op on the list is CHS Inc., a Minnesota-based energy, grains and food operation, with $25.2 billion in revenues last year.
