North Dakota regulators have approved Basin Electric Power Cooperative's plans to build a power transmission line in the northwestern part of the state.

The line will extend for 61 miles, connecting electric substations at Williston and Tioga. Basin estimates it will cost $24 million to build.

North Dakota's Public Service Commission approved the project's route on Wednesday. Commissioner Tony Clark says it will help satisfy rising demand for electricity in North Dakota's oil-producing region. Clark says the power line also should improve the reliability of the region's electric service.

Basin Electric is based in Bismarck. It supplies power to rural electric co-ops.
