Andrew Ficek had a shaggy head of hair Wednesday morning

Then he and three friends had their heads shaved. The Century High School seniors did it for the St. Baldrick's Day fundraiser to raise money for childhood cancer research.

"It's not like we're losing a whole lot," said D.J. Masse, one of the high school students to get his head shaved.

Masse's hair Wednesday morning was longer than he normally keeps it. His brown hair curled near his ears and covered his forehead.

Ficek, Masse, Nate Haynes and Chris Clinton spent lunch hours raising money, as well as soliciting donations from friends and family. Masse's little brother, Matthew, also joined the boys to get his head shaved.

It's the second year the boys participated in the St. Baldrick's event. Last year, Ficek was in need of a haircut, when his mother told him about the event.

"For me, it felt weird because I have always had hair that was shaggy," Ficek said.

His friend, Haynes, on the other hand had shorter hair before he had it shaved.

"Last year it was longer," Haynes said. "I had it shaved and then liked the look and kept it."

They had more teammates last year, but a few bowed out, wanting to still look nice for senior pictures. Masse hasn't had his senior picture taken yet, but doesn't care that his hair was shorn.

They do not know how much money they raised this year for the St. Baldrick's Foundation. Last year they raised about $1,500.

The head shaving took place at Basin Electric. In addition to Basin employees and the Century High School students, there were people representing Bismarck State College, Dakota United Soccer Club, University of Mary, KEM Electric and NISC who had their heads shaved. MDU Resources Group, Mahoney and Mahoney Attorneys, the Bismarck Bobcats and the Bismarck Tribune also had representatives shave their heads, but at a different time and place.
