A power plant and a corn field have a lot in
common: both provide energy and both are part of the diverse energy mix in rural America. Farmers grow corn to provide food, feed, and fuel and Basin Electric provides the electricity to power those endeavors.
The people who operate Basin Electric's power plants are driven by our members' demand for power. In turn, the electricity we provide to our electric co-ops helps support a strong rural economy and a treasured way of life. It's a great partnership that has lasted almost 50 years and is still growing.
This is the embodiment of Basin Electric's mission to provide best-in-class, cost-effective, wholesale energy along with products and services that support and unite rural America. We're not in the merchant power plant business. We exist because of our members.
Basin Electric incorporates a variety of energy resources – coal, hydropower, wind, natural gas – to allow our members reasonable power costs.
The majority of our resources are fueled by lignite and subbituminous coals, which are abundant, easily accessible and stable in the marketplace.
Basin Electric's subsidiary, Dakota Coal Company, markets North Dakota lignite from a coal mine near our lignite-based power plants. Basin Electric also has a subsidiary, Dakota Gasification Company, that uses lignite to manufacture synthetic natural gas.
