Basin Electric employees have a strong commitment to their communities. Not only does the Cooperative financially support a variety of charitable organizations, staff also make monetary contributions to a number of causes they feel strongly about. These programs include donations to AID Inc., Bismarck (ND) Emergency Food Pantry, the Sharing Tree, Jeans Day and Fill the Bus.
For the past 12 years, Basin Electric Headquarters and neighboring Aetna U.S. Healthcare have engaged in a friendly "food fight" to see which organization could raise the most money. The money is used to help restock two local food pantries - the Bismarck Emergency Food Pantry and AID Inc. in Mandan, ND - during the holiday season.
Two years ago the battle was expanded to include other neighboring organizations: Nelson Family Dentistry and Unistop gas station.
For the ninth year, Basin Electric employees generously supported the Sharing Tree. In November, 100 ornaments are placed on a tree in the Headquarters lobby. Each ornament contains the name, age, gender and clothing size for an underprivileged child from the Bismarck-Mandan area. Employees have the opportunity to brighten the Christmas of these children by providing presents filled with clothing, toys and much more.
Together with the Bismarck Tribune, the Basin Employee Association (BEA) holds Jeans Day, a weekly fundraising activity designated to help raise money for individuals, families and organizations in need. Each Friday, Headquarter employees donate $1 to wear jeans to work. Many people and programs have seen the benefits of this fundraising effort as a new recipient is selected each week.
Educating America's youth is a very important and worthwhile cause for Basin Electric, especially when these youth are underprivileged or lack access to basic educational tools and opportunities. The BEA helps organize collection efforts for the annual Fill the Bus drive by encouraging employees to purchase and donate school supplies that will be dispersed to local kids in need.
