Green Tags

PrairieWinds® - Energy in Motion

Basin Electric and several of its member systems market green tag certificates (also known as renewable energy certificates) in connection with wind energy resources either owned by or contracted to Basin Electric. These green tags are marketed under a program called PrairieWinds® - Energy in Motion. These green tags are a way for consumers to support the production of renewable energy and reduce the impact of their personal energy consumption

Green tags represent the environmental attributes, or environmental benefit, resulting from the generation of one megawatt-hour(MWh) or 1,000 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of renewable or green energy (watch the Green Tag video).

The purchase of a green tags should be viewed as a sponsorship of green energy. The purchaser will receive ownership of all the environmental attributes of 1 MWh of renewable energy. Theoretically, the purchase of a green tag allows the purchaser to apply the green tag's environmental attributes to offset the environment impact of his/her personal energy consumption.

The purchase of green tags is only for the environmental attributes of the green energy. The actual electricity from these green resources is delivered to the electrical grid power pool where that energy is used to serve consumer needs.
