Sunrise at Basin Electric Headquarters Nov. 6, 2009

"...  In 1961, after the members formed Basin Electric, business began with (General Manager) Jim Grahl, a card table for a desk, and very little money. Sixty years later, in 2020, we’re anticipating to be nearly a 5,000-megawatt utility, serving 3 million consumers. Now, there’s a lot of reasons for that, but two of them are: co-op philosophy and hard work." ~ speech by Wayne Backman, senior vice president of Generation, Nov. 4, 2009

Although many other organizations have faced significant economic challenges in the past year, Basin Electric has remained stable.

Basin Electric's board and management said there are many reasons to be proud of the past year's accomplishments, most notably: the successful financing of our construction program; the vote to make Corn Belt Power Cooperative a Class A member and a District 11 board seat; the decision by the Surface Transportation Board regarding captive rail shippers, and further diversification of our energy portfolio.

In the middle of a national recession, Basin Electric grew its businesses, improved its operating practices, and renewed its pledge to enhance and protect its energy resources and manage related costs of power for the benefit of our rural electric member-owners.
