Each day more than 1,900 Basin Electric and subsidiary employees produce reliable, affordable energy for our member-owners and other rural Americans. We rely on these employees to keep our power plants, coal gasification and coproduct facilities, lime plant and limestone quarry operations, transmission maintenance outposts, and Headquarters running safely and efficiently.
Basin Electric's successes - both past and present - have been built on their labor.
That is why it's important to recognize that individual employees are donating their time and talent through volunteering and financial giving to many local and national civic and charitable organizations. Basin Electric provides opportunities for staff to support charitable events in the community, but many employees use their own time to make a difference.

Since 1999, Basin Electric employees, families and friends have geared up for the Great American Bike Race. The race, which was created by Medcenter One's Rehabilitation Center, helps raise money for families of those diagnosed with cerebral palsy (CP).
Every September, Basin Electric takes part in the annual Roger Zarfos United Way Softball Fun Day fundraiser. Roger Zarfos, former Basin Electric employee, organized the co-ed charity softball tournament in 1983. Initially, the tournament was only for Basin Electric employees; however, after a few successful years, the event grew to include many other companies. The tournament was named in honor of Zarfos following his death in 1987.
According to its Web site, rmhh.org, the Ruth Meiers Hospitality House, named in honor of Lieutenant Governor Ruth Meiers, began in 1987 as a shelter for the homeless within the Bismarck-Mandan area. The Stone Soup Kitchen provides free, nutritious and well-balanced meals to the homeless or any individual in need in the Bismarck-Mandan region. Basin Electric employees work with Ruth Meiers Hospitality House staff to prepare and serve the noon meal one Wednesday several months throughout the year.
Basin Electric actively supports the education of our nation's youth. Some of the ways it does so are through the summer work program, employee and member student scholarships, and participating in Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day.
Basin Electric and its subsidiaries hire sons and daughters of employees through the Summer Work Program. This gives them an opportunity to earn money for their college expenses while gaining work experience.
As part of our scholarship program, Basin Electric donates more than 160 scholarships to children of Basin Electric members and employees. Recipients are chosen for their participation in school and community activities, academic excellence, work experience and career goals.

"What do you want to be when you grow up?"
From the time children enter kindergarten to graduation from school, this question follows them into adulthood. Basin Electric helps kids explore one option for a future career by participating in the national annual "Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day" at Headquarters.
The goal of the program is to expand future opportunities for young people, ages 9-14, and to help them make connections between what they are taught in school and their future aspirations.
