... more about Basin Electric. |
Our core business is coal-based electric generation and transmission (G&T) with coal gasification, synthetic natural gas production, carbon dioxide (CO2) capture and transport, gas turbine generation, wind energy, waste heat (renewable) energy, and nuclear power expanding our energy portfolio.
On Sept. 1, 2009, Corn Belt Power Cooperative (Corn Belt Power) of Humboldt, IA, became a Class A member of Basin Electric Power Cooperative. Corn Belt Power retains ownership of its generation and transmission facilities; however, all of Corn Belt Power’s generation is included in our energy portfolio as purchased power. In turn, Corn Belt Power buys all of its power needs above its hydropower allocation from Basin Electric.
Basin Electric operates three baseload coal-fired power plants, and three gas combustion sites (9 turbines), two natural gas turbine units, and a two-unit, oil-fired plant as peaking units. Basin Electric owns, but does not operate, 40-MW of a natural gas/oil-fired combustion turbine, also used as a peaking unit. In Basin Electric’s renewable energy portfolio, we currently own and operate wind turbines near Chamberlain, SD, and Minot, ND.
Basin Electric has power contracts to purchase electric generation from the Western peaking allocation (hydro), coal, nuclear, natural gas, wind, waste heat, and distributed generation facilities in several states. For a summary of Basin Electric’s generation, go to At a Glance.
Basin Electric is building or purchasing 420 MW of renewable energy (both wind and waste heat energy), while constructing a 385-MW coal-based unit in Wyoming, of which Basin Electric owns 92.9% of the unit. In addition, Basin Electric is building a natural-gas fueled peaking station near Culbertson, MT, and the 300-MW combined cycle Deer Creek power plant near White, SD, including related transmission and substation facilities. For information about committed projects, go to Projects.
Basin Electric’s high-voltage transmission lines span the skies of the Upper Midwest through three major systems: the Integrated System (IS), the Common Use System (CUS) and the MBPP Transmission system. We are currently building transmission and substation lines and facilities in Wyoming, North Dakota and South Dakota. For more information about Basin Electric and shared transmission systems, go to Transmission.
Dakota Gasification Company, a subsidiary of Basin Electric, owns and operates the Great Plains Synfuels Plant, near Beulah, ND, a commercial coal-gasification facility that manufactures synthetic natural gas for distribution via the Northern Border Pipeline in addition to manufacturing many valuable coproducts. The Synfuels Plant is also a successful carbon dioxide (CO2) capture and transport company. To date, Dakota Gas has sent more than 13 million tons of CO2 via a pipeline to Canadian oil fields for geologic sequestration.
