Basin Electric Power Cooperative's core business is providing wholesale generation and transmission of electricity to our member-owners in nine states. We are also the parent company of eight subsidiaries.
Two major for-profit subsidiaries are Dakota Gasification Company and Dakota Coal Company.

Great Plains Synfuels Plant |
Dakota Gas, a for-profit subsidiary of Basin Electric, owns and operates the Great Plains Synfuels Plant (Synfuels Plant), near Beulah, ND. The Synfuels Plant gasifies lignite coal to produce pipeline quality synthetic neutral gas (SNG). The average daily production is about 145 million cubic standard feet (MMSCF) of natural gas for distribution in the eastern United States. Dakota Gas also produces and markets valuable products, e.g., phenol, anhydrous ammonia, ammonium sulfate, carbon dioxide (CO2), crude cresylic acid, krypton/xenon gases, liquid nitrogen, naphtha.
Dakota Gas manages one for-profit subsidiary, Souris Valley Pipeline Ltd. The pipeline delivers about 152 MMSCF of CO2 daily to two Canadian oil fields for enhanced oil recovery and CO2 sequestration (video).
Dakota Coal, a for-profit subsidiary of Basin Electric, finances the operations of Freedom Mine, which is owned and operated by The Coteau Properties Company (Coteau) near Beulah, ND (video). Wyoming Lime Producers (WLP), a division of Dakota Coal, produces lime reagent at its plant near Frannie, WY. Dakota Coal also manages the Montana Limestone Company.
Montana Limestone Company (MLC), a for-profit subsidiary of Dakota Coal, operates a limestone quarry and fine grind plant near Warren, MT.
Basin Telecommunications Inc. (BTInet), a for-profit subsidiary of Basin Electric, provides telecommunications and Internet services.
Basin Cooperative Services, a not-for-profit subsidiary of Basin Electric, acquires supplies, materials, resources, fuel, services and products for electric plant facilities.
PrairieWinds ND 1, Inc., for-profit subsidiary of Basin Electric, was established on Feb. 13, 2008, to build and operate wind generation in North Dakota. The PrairieWinds 1 wind project is located south of Minot. Construction on the wind project began in Aug. 2009 and commercial operation began in late December 2009. PrairieWinds ND 1, Inc. also owns the Minot Wind Project south of Minot.
PrairieWinds SD 1, Inc., a for-profit subsidiary of Basin Electric, was established on Feb. 13, 2008, to build and operate wind generation in South Dakota. Planning for the PrairieWinds SD 1 wind project is progressing, with construction beginning in 2010 and commissioning in early 2011.
