Basin Electric Power Cooperative is a consumer-owned, regional generation and transmission (G&T) cooperative providing wholesale power to 137 member rural electric systems in nine states. Basin Electric is a parent company to eight subsidiaries. The following statistics are for end-of-year (EOY) 2014.

In 2013, renewable and green generation (wind and recovered energy generation) equaled 10.5 percent of Basin Electric's total energy mix.  Note: The actual renewable energy attributes (aka green tags or RECs) of much of that generation was allocated to Basin Electric's members and no claims of environmental attributes may be claimed for any part of Basin Electric’s power supply, unless those attributes are assigned to the power claimed as green or renewable. (March 2013)


In 2013, coal-based generation equaled 77.2 percent of Basin Electric's total energy portfolio mix.

Subsidiaries

  • Dakota Gasification Company, which operates the Great Plains Synfuels Plant near Beulah, ND. Souris Valley Pipeline LTD, a subsidiary of Dakota Gas, delivers carbon dioxide to an oil field for enhanced oil recovery.
  • Dakota Coal Company, which is the fuel supplier for the Synfuels Plant, Antelope Valley Station, and Leland Olds Station. Wyoming Lime Producers, a division of Dakota Coal, owns a lime processing plant near Frannie, WY. Montana Limestone Company (MLC), a subsidiary of Dakota Coal, is a limestone quarry operator near Warren, MT.
  • Basin Telecommunications Inc. (BTInet), a for-profit subsidiary of Basin Electric, provides telecommunications and Internet services.
  • Souris Valley Pipeline Ltd., a for-profit subsidiary of Dakota Gas, delivers CO2 to two Canadian oil fields for enhanced oil recovery.
  • PrairieWinds ND 1 Inc., a for-profit subsidiary of Basin Electric, will own, build, and operate wind generation in North Dakota.
  • PrairieWinds SD 1 Inc., a for-profit subsidiary of Basin Electric, will own, build, and operate wind generation in South Dakota.
  • Basin Cooperative Services, a not-for-profit subsidiary of Basin Electric, acquires resources and services for electric plant generation.
